Broken Heroes

Website design for a fantasy gaming event.

The Problem

After a successful first event, my client needed to transition from using a Facebook event page to a website to house all of the information for their event. They needed the website to also have the potential for store integration in the future.

This was a solo mission.

The Solution

I designed a website that effectively organizes and communicates the event details, and ensured that the website can grow with my client’s future needs. The design also communicated the client’s desire for the event to feel unique, adventurous and fantastical.

Process

Competitive Research & Analysis

I evaluated a number of websites for similar events to get an understanding of how they organize their event information. This helped me to determine navigation headings and information architecture. In addition, this research gave me an understanding of the visual design used by competitors. This helped to shape the visual design of the site I was building to ensure some degree of differentiation.

Site Planning

Site design began with wireframes, site maps, and task flows to test the site structure and organization prior to prototype development. Site maps were used to structure content and ensure ease of navigation and organization. Page sketches were used to begin the visualization of graphic and content elements. The sketches were done to ensure that the design direction was working prior to building the prototype. Wireframes were developed based on the evaluated page sketches. This step further helps to flesh out the prototype prior to the major investment of time in building it.

Prototype Development

Based on iterations from the planning stage, a prototype site was made in Figma. I focused on a high fidelity prototype to start with, as the client was not familiar with wireframes. The high fidelity prototype was better able to communicate the look and feel of the website.

User Testing

After creating a task list, user testing of the prototype was conducted. The site was tested with the client, past event participants, and users with no prior knowledge of the event. The information organization was of particular importance to test for.
